Greetings and salutations!
In
this installment, I’m going to take a small step away from the topic of digital
photography to discuss one of my fellow colleague’s blog. Uei Chen has created
a very clean and easy to navigate blog which is titled, “Digital Technology
& Museum”. Her blog discusses the digital image and its place within the
museum world. Topics such as curation, displaying and the archiving of digital
media are discussed. For myself, being an art history major, I find myself
fascinated with the topic of digital art. I found all of her posts to be of
interest to me, however, I found her, “Case Study 3: Interactive Art” to be
especially captivating.
In
this blog installment, Uei Chen introduces the reader to the world of
interactive art. She describes how the traditional art world is slowly evolving
from the influence of the digital world. She explains how traditionally, art collecting was for the upper class and now with the introduction of the
Internet we find artwork being more approachable by people of more diverse
economic classes. For example, the website “Behance” is cited as a popular
platform for artists to upload their digital work and share it with the world.
She
then introduces the idea of traditional museums embracing the world of digital
art. For example she discusses the Cleveland museum of art and how they
introduced a project they call “Gallery One”. Within this gallery, museum patrons
are encouraged to interact with technology so as to be introduced to new pieces
of artwork. For example, the installment entitled, “Strike a Pose” invites visitors to explore figurative sculpture by
asking them to match the pose of a sculpture they see on the screen. A motion
sensor records their pose, and the interactive determines how closely the
visitor has approached the artist’s sculpted body.
Throughout
the post, links to the major concepts of the article were presented. I found
that when my interest was piqued, a handy link was there for me to simply click
on. I was easily navigated to these points of interests, while being able to
simply return to her blog to keep on reading. I thought that the article presented
a logical narrative and easily segued from one concept to another. If you would
like to read more about this topic, please visit her blog at: http://ueiii.tumblr.com/ . Thanks for
reading. -Tim
